All Due Respect Books -- which is the baby of "Squeeze" author Chris Rhatigan -- is expressly not about likable heroes. It's about losers, bums, and amoral sleazebuckets. Lionel Kaspar, the protagonist here, is a bottom feeder. He has (as far as I can tell) no redeeming qualities other than intelligence -- though that could be classified more as cunning. He's also not as clever as he thinks he is, which is what helps drive the story. All in all, he's like a cut-rate Tom Ripley. But the thing about Ripley was that in a weird way, you still pulled for him to get away with his capers, and so it is with Kaspar. The backdrop of low-level journalism helped this tale a lot. As a Connecticut native, that setting was enjoyable for me; same goes for the sports subtext. The cliffhanger ending makes me want another Kaspar "scam" too. Plus, I enjoy reading Rhatigan for the unusual angles from which he comes at writing.

Squeeze edition by Chris Rhatigan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
First, anyone who works in the journalism or considers themselves a "journalist" should read this. This book is set at a local newspaper, and the details are perfect. A blue, low-rent place, where people toil in obscurity and poverty because they believe they're standing up for truth and justice, or whatever. At the same time, it's the kind of job anyone with a set of ears and moderate typing skills could do. It's a weird world, like stepping into a hidden flea market in the s***ty neighborhood in your town.
Next, this is the kind of book that you don't put down. The evolution of Kaspar from minor-league cretin to scheming monster happens quickly, and it's the kind of journey that makes you anxious and paranoid. You'll be afraid to see a little bit of yourself in him.
Lionel Kaspar’s first love is gambling. His second and third are booze and cigarettes. I’m not sure he has a fourth. His work at the public health department is easy enough for him to tolerate, but the pay’s poor and he needs cash to support loves one, two and three. The opportunity arises for him to take on a position as a journalist with a local newspaper. It doesn’t matter that he has no qualifications for the job, because he has no scruples either and just makes them up.
It isn’t long before he’s making up other things either. Front page stories, for example.
Pretty soon, he’s the rising star of the press and is enjoying the freedom his new lifestyle allows. The money’s great and he even starts to appreciate some of the skills in the craft of sniffing out stories and writing news. The problem is, he’s greedy and the money isn’t enough. When the idea of blackmailing people with what he knows occurs to him, it looks as though he’s hit on the magic formula that will give him everything he needs.
Noses are quickly put out of joint. He rattles the cage of one hack in particular and before long Kaspar’s new life is in serious danger of being flushed down the tubes. Now that he’s tasted the sweet smell of relative success, he’s not prepared to let it go without a fight.
Squeeze is a brilliant story. The central character is a terrific creation. He’s cynical, cold and sleazy, but he’s also extremely entertaining and sharp and easy to hang around with. Rhatigan injects an uneasy tension at each turn and ratchets up the pressure steadily all the way to the final crisis.
I love the way this tale is hewn from the ordinary and that the author exploits the flaws in everyday people to drive things forward rather than simply throwing the kitchen sink at the plot. The whole piece is gripping and yet nicely understated from start to finish.
I have no hesitation in recommending Squeeze. It’s exactly the kind of book I want on my kindle. A definite ace in the hole.
Lionel Kaspar quits his safe-but-dull health department job and lies his way into a journalist's position at a local newspaper. However, Kaspar soon realises that it's much easier - and more profitable- to just make up stories rather than do any actual reporting.
Chris Rhatigan's Squeeze is just great. Lionel Kaspar is one of the sleaziest and most amoral fictional creations of recent times and easily one of of the most enjoyable. Imagine Melville's Bartleby crossed with Henry Chinaski and Tom Ripley and you're halfway there.
Squeeze is smart, askew, laugh out loud funny, and, of course, not for those of a delicate sensibility.
Five stars.
Having had Chris Rhatigan as a teacher it was great to see him from a different angle in Squeeze. The style of writing really builds up tension in the book and shows the dark side of his characters. I will be reading the rest of his books after this.
I love Rhatigan's work.
Chris Rhatigan's latest, Squeeze, is a real noir treat. Lionel Kaspar is exactly the perfect character for this type of tale--unethical, deplorable, and lacking any moral code. It was entertaining to watch him navigate his way into a career as a journalist, and then witness him year it all down around him. Rhatigan nails the addictive type--incessant smoking, gambling, and the like--as well as adeptly flexing his knowledge of news reporting in its current state and city government. Excellent read. Couldn't put it down. Hope Mr. Rhatigan is burning the midnight oil writing his next one.
Wow. A novella sized story that is so compellingly written it's hard to put down. Something about the slacker character captured in the first person narration just captures his character. It's all about the adventures of a slacker who wants a payday but doesn't want to strain himself working. Answering phones at the health dept- makes up any response he pleases. Working as a reporter - same deal - make up any story he pleases and spend his time in the local bar. Rhatigan gets this guy - gets his motivations - and gets you as the reader to see things from this SOB's point of view.
